"Mean Girls" is a 2004 American teen comedy film directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey. The film stars Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, a teenage girl who has spent most of her life in Africa and now finds herself navigating the treacherous social hierarchy of a suburban Illinois high school.
As Cady struggles to fit in, she befriends a duo of social outcasts named Janis Ian (played by Lizzy Caplan) and Damian Leigh (played by Daniel Franzese), who help her to navigate the cliques and rivalries of the school. However, things become complicated when Cady is recruited by the popular "Plastics" clique, led by the manipulative Regina George (played by Rachel McAdams).
What follows is a sharp, witty satire of high school politics, as Cady learns to navigate the treacherous waters of popularity, while also dealing with her own personal demons. The film is known for its biting humour, memorable one-liners, and vivid characters, including Fey's own character, Ms. Norbury, a math teacher who helps Cady to confront the toxic behaviour of the Plastics.
"Mean Girls" was a critical and commercial success upon its release and has since become a cultural phenomenon, spawning a Broadway musical adaptation and countless references in popular culture. The film is often cited as one of the best teen comedies of all time, and its enduring popularity is a testament to its sharp writing, memorable characters, and universal themes of identity, belonging, and self-acceptance.
